Died in route he was in the David Wood Pioneer Company. Buried along Platte River near present day Gothenburg, Nebraka.
Edmond Howell and Sarah Vail left Council Bluff in 1852 to go west with a company of the saints, they had traveled only a short distance up the Platt River when Cholera broke out among the company and Edmund Wheller Howell and their 13 year old daughter Harriet Mariah died. This left Sara with three children, the oldest son Elias Willes then 14 years of age, Mary Lovina 8 years and a Ophelia 6 mos. She had lost several other children. George Edward 1945, Emily Ann 1848 and Sarah Elizabeth 1850. With her determination and the help of others in the David Wood company she was able to continue on to Utah and later settle in Fairview.

Could I please make one suggestion. The death place for Edmund Wheeler shows as Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa. We know that the David Wood Company left Iowa in June 1852 and had traveled about 240 miles when Edmund Wheeler Howell died on 10 July 1852 and Harriet Mariah on 13 July 1852. By following the Mormon Trail path, the location of Edmund and Harriet's death was in Nebraska Territory near present day Gothenburg, Nebraska. The notation in Sarah Vail Howell's biography that they had not travelled "far" may lead some to think that the company was still in the area of Council Bluffs. In this case the term "far" (240 miles) was not far relative to the length of the total journey.
The records for Edmund Wheeler Howell in Family Tree have been modified to show that Edmund's death place was "near present day Gothenburg, Dawson, Nebraska, that term being used to provide some idea as to proximity rather than Nebraska Territory which at the time stretched from the Missouri River on the east to the Rocky Mountains on the west.
Please consider making a change to Edmund and Harriet's death place to show "near present day Gothenburg, Dawson, Nebraska, United States." That will provide a location that is more accurate.
Again, thank you for your your family history contributions.

Sincerely,

Steve Howell
