About 288 individuals and about 58 wagons were in the David Wood Company when it began its journey on June 6, 1852 from the outfitting post as Kanesville, Iowa (present day Council Bluffs). They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley between September 20 and October 1, 1852.

Harriet Moriah Howell, 12, was traveling with her parents, Edmund and Sarah Vail Howell, and three siblings. Her father, Edmund Wheeler Howell, died on July 10, 1852 near present day Gothenberg, Dawson, Nebraska. Harriet died on the trail eight days later and was buried along the Platte River.
