The son of Martin & Elizabeth (Zeiders) Uhler, he was orphaned and in 1850 was living with the Jeremiah Hench family in Jackson Township, Perry County, Pennsyvlania, but was not the area in 1860 to appear in that census. By 1857, he stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted with the antebellum army in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, June 2, 1857, assigned to Co. G, 10th U.S. Infantry, and honorably discharged at term's end June 2, 1862, more than a year into the Civil War.
2. Despite his five years with the regular army, he was federally drafted and mustered into federal service at Carlisle August 14, 1863, at the rank of private, promoted to sergeant May 16, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company June 24, 1865. That a five-year veteran of the regular army was not promoted beyond private until three weeks before discharge is a bit unusual.

He married Elizabeth Anderson ca. 1862 and fathered Emma S. (b. 07/30/63 - married J. George W. Jauss), William Harvey (b. (b. 07/20/65), Mary C. (b. 11/29/66), and Anna Salome (b. 01/11/69 - married Charles L. Rhoads). Cause of his death is listed as "cerebral apoplexy" leading to "cardiac failure."
