William Ahrens, one of the old-time residents of this community, died at the family home in this city Saturday, February 22 at 7 o'clock p.m., at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 1 day. The deceased was born near Herman, Mo., December 23, 1851. He grew to manhood on a farm near that place and later learned the blacksmith trade which he followed until the spring of 1886 when he came to Kansas and located on a farm northeast of Ellinwood where he has since resided.
On November 23, 1877, he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Scheidecker, and he is survived by his wife and six children, four daughters and two sons. The children are Mrs. Minnie Hofmeister of Claflin, Mrs. Emma Fenn, of Cunningham, Mrs. Emelia Schridde, of Great Bend and Mrs. Clara Rugan of St. John. The sons are Sam and Ed Ahrens, both of Ellinwood. The other sons preceded the father in death. Will on July 25, 1928 and John in December 1888.
He also leaves 15 grand-children, and three brothers, Henry Ahrens, of Higginsville, Mo., Charles Ahrens, of Halstead, Kans. and Edward Ahrens, of Nora Springs, Iowa. For many years Mr. Ahrens had been an active member of the Methodist church of this city and one of its most loyal and energetic workers. Short funeral services were held at the family home Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the M.E. church...
Mr. Ahrens was a man held in very high esteem among his associtates and a wide circle of friends and the bereaved wife and children and other relatives have the deep sympathy of the community in their hour of sorrow. --Great Bend Tribune, 3-1-1930.
