Ed was the son of Wilhelm (William) Ahrens and Bertha L. (Scheidecker). He never married. He died from heart disease complications at the Great Bend hospital.
"Edward H. Ahrens, a resident of this community most of the time for the last 55 years, died suddenly at St. Rose hospital in Great Bend, Tuesday, shortly after noon at the age of 62....Mr. Ahrens was of a very quiet disposition, attending to his own affairs efficiently and promptly and never intruding on the business of other people. He made the best, always, of circumstances and was not given to complaint. His passing brings a real loss not only to his immediate relatives, but to his church and his communnity. Edward H. Ahrens was born at Bem, MO, Oct 3, 1878 and came with his parents to Ellinwood in 1886 when he was 12 years of age. The family settled on a farm five miles northeast of Ellinwood. Mr. Ahrens grew to young manhood in the community and at the age of 14 accepted Chrsit and united with the Methodist church, a loyalty to which he always was true throughout his life. In 1900 and 1901 Mr. Ahrens attended Enterprise College, in Enterprise, KS, graduating from that institution before taking up an active life of farming for himself. Later he moved to Bison, KS, where he engaged in farming until 1921 when he returned to Ellinwood to assist his parents. Mr. Ahrens' father passed away Feb. 22, 1930 and since that time Mr. Ahrens has made his home here, taking care of his mother, who now is 83 years of age." -- From obit. Ellinwood Leader, 9-18-1941.
