Mary Elizabeth Bishop was one of several children of Hiram Smith Bishop (1826-1886) and Anna Matheny Bishop (1839-1894). The Bishop line has been traced back to Lewis Bishop (ID 53526644) of Edinburgh, Indiana, in the early 1800s; the Puritan minister Rev. John Bishop (ID 50504127), who emigrated from Cattistock, Dorset, England, to Connecticut in the 1600s; and other John Bishops dating back to the 1300s.

Mary was named for her grandmother, Mary Adams Bishop; and for her aunt, Elizabeth Bishop Whited.

Mary married Thomas Manley Holt on June 13, 1877, and they had six children together:

1. Orange Leslie Holt (1878-1970)
2. Cordie Liona Holt (1879 - 1881)
3. Effie Anna Holt (Sommer) (1881 - 1959)
4. Smith Bishop Holt (1883-1977)
5. Nora Crystal Holt (Stuart) (1894-1960)
6. Vada Opal Holt (Whetstone) (1897-1984)

The Holts were a farming family. In 1891 they moved to a farm west of Scio. After retirement, Thomas M. and Mary E. Holt turned the farm over to Smith and Eveline Holt to operate their dairy farm, and continued to reside in a house on the farm property, which was west of Scio.

Mary died on January 17, 1927, of apoplexy (stroke) after an extended illness. Thomas died from influenza and pneumonia, 17 days later, on February 3. Family lore has it that Thomas lost all will to live. The Jefferson cemetery book states that he died "of complications following pneumonia and the shock of the recent death of his wife."
