A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the overstated age of nineteen and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 31, 1862, as a private with Co. F, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863. He is in the company register as "Miley." The tombstone's claim that he served with Co. A is erroneous as all of his military records have him serving with Co. F with no indication of a company-to-company transfer.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Harrisburg March 29, 1864, mustered into federal service there May 7 as a private with Co. H, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged August 3, 1865. He is in the company register as "Meily."
On March 21, 1907, he entered the soldiers home at Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, but left at his request March 25, 1909. He re-entered the facility December 29, 1911, left again December 21, 1912, re-entered once more June 15, 1914, and left at his request for the final time on April 8, 1914. Cause of his death is listed as an "injury to left hip [from a fall], neuritis, abscess of jaw, innutrition, [and] exhaustion."
