The death of Mr. Humphrey Martin Drake, age 25 years, occurred at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Drake, near Green Valley, Saturday evening last, July 24, 1897, after an illness of some three weeks, with malarial and typhoid fever. The deceased was a bright, promising young man. He has for the past year or so been attending college at Emporia, Kansas. He was one of a family of eleven children, seven boys and four girls, he being the first one to die. The deceased was born in Delavan, Feb. 18, 1872*. His parents soon after moved to their present home near Green Valley. At the age of ten Humphrey went to live with his sister, Mrs. W. W. Waltmire, at Carbondale, Kanss. In June, 1887, he became a member of the Christian church at that place, and lived a devoted Christian life, making friends wherever he went, especially with children. The past six years was spent at college and teaching school. He was attending the summer school at the State Normal, at Emporia, Kansas, when taken sick with the malaria. He arrived home, July 4, and soon after typhoid fever set in, which terminated in his death.
The funeral which was very largely attended, took place Monday last, at 2 p.m., the services being conducted by Rev. Ira Mason, pastor of the Christian church in Delavan. The six surviving brothers served as pall-bearers at the burial.
