Son of Samuel Cockayne and Mary Lowe of Talbot County, Maryland. Samuel left Maryland with his brother, Carter, and moved to Amberson Valley, Franklin County, PA before moving on to Ohio County, Virginia, now Marshall County, WV. Samuel purchased land near present-day Moundsville, WV, built a house of virgin walnut logs, enlarged it, and upgraded it as time went on. His home was known as Valley Farm. In addition to farming, Samuel served as constable, dabbled in business ventures, and ran an ordinary out of his home. Samuel married three times. His first wife was Sarah Cockayne, the mother of his eight oldest children. Jones is listed as Sarah's maiden name in family records, but no official record exists confirming this. When Sarah died, Samuel married Martha Burbridge Price, herself a widow. This marriage produced no issue. When Martha died, Samuel married Hannah McDonald Arnett, who had lost her husband. Samuel and Hannah had a daughter named Margaret Vina Cockayne.
