Bennett began construction on the present-day Cockayne Farmhouse in 1850. Bennett was the postmaster in Moundsville and was the proprietor of a general store in Elizabethtown. One of Bennett's sons, Alexander, taught the first school in Glen Dale from his father's home. Bennett's son, Samuel A.J. Cockayne, inherited the farm and under his management, the Farm became well known for the Merino wool it produced.
