In about 1841, Hiram and Elizabeth Riggs Cockayne came to Des Moines County, Iowa and purchased a farm in Flint River Township. Hiram's brother, Samuel, and Samuel's family came at the same time. Hiram and Elizabeth had thirteen children, and Samuel and his wife, Mary Price Cockayne, had the same number. Probably due to the sheer numbers of the family members, many of the early landmarks were named for the Cockaynes. A small pioneer settlement grew up on the fringes of Hiram and Samuel's farms, where the first church was called the Cockayne Church, and the first school was the Cockayne School. After Hiram died in 1869, Elizabeth continued on the farm until her children were grown and married, selling in 1885 and moving west with her son, Hiram Joseph. Elizabeth returned to Des Moines County to live with one of her daughters in about 1890.
