The reported son of John Perry & Lucinda Ann (Peterfish) Nauman, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 4" tall and had light hair and gray eyes. Maryland is also reported as his birth place.
A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service, all as "Christian Burns":
1. Enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Lancaster July 24, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. I, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of eighteen at McCall's Ferry June 28, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis, mustered into state service at Harrisburg July 6 as a private with Co. K, 47th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 14, 1863.
3. Enlisted at the stated age of nineteen and mustered into federal service at Lancaster January 19, 1864, as a private with Independent Battery I Pennsylvania Light Artillery. He was hospitalized for alleged heart disease at Fort Whipple, Virginia, but discharged with his battery June 23, 1865, at Philadelphia. He is in the company register as "Burnes."
The reason for the alias is unknown, but it was not unusual for eager underage recruits to not only lie about their ages, as Christian did, but their names as well to hinder their parents from discovering their whereabouts.
His brother Robert Franklin Nauman served with Co. K, 10th Virginia Infantry, C.S.A. (See Findagrave #2537365)
He married Mary C. Frick August 12, 1866, in Lancaster and fathered Minnie S. (b. 06/18/70 or 71 - married Samuel Nunamaker and is present in the 1870 census) and Frank (b. @1874). In 1883, he was living on Woodward Street in Lancaster but died at age 55-10-15 from "chronic bronchitis & emphysema" in Jersey City, New Jersey, where he his death certificate lists his name as "Christian Nauman."
