ED NEWBY, FORMER POLICE CHIEF, DIES
Frank Herron Newby, 68, more intimately known by his many friends as "Ed", former City Police Chief and long time policeman, died in the Tucumacri General Hospital Sunday, November 1,1959 at 7 p.m., following a long illness.
Newby was seriously burned last week when his hospital bed caught fire, apparently from a faulty heating pad. He was unable to remove the burning pad or to call for help.
Newby has been making his home in Tucumcari since 1930. He was a member of the Christian Church. He was a city policeman from 1945 to 1948.
Newby is survived by his widow, Mary Effie Newby, Tucumcari; 7 children, Beatrice deValera, Las Vegas, Nev.; Warrent Officer Lewis Newby, Weatherford, Tex.; Mrs,Estellene Sills, Grand Junction, Colo.; Mrs. Juanita Nix, Tucumcari; Mrs. Muriel Spears, Las Vegas, Nev.; M-Sgt. James Newby, San Angelo, Tex.; and Mrs. Luella Fitzner, Durango, Colo.; 19 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Beatrice Smith, Graham, Tex.; and Kate Coleman, Olney, Tex.; and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon at Dunn's Memorial Chapel at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. J.W. Nash, pastor of the Assembly of God Church, Corpus Christi, Tex. officiating, assisted by the Rev.H.M. Fulton, pastor of the Assembly of God Church,Tucumcari, N.M.
Active pall bearers will be Julius Fitzner, Herman Fitzner, Bill Williams, Jerry Brunk, Manford Rainwater and Hubert Beasley.
Honorary pall bearers will be Dr. A.T. Gordon, F.H. Fitzner, Tom Bowman, Paul Velasco, Oscar Reid, Johnie Dugger, Lyman Dudley, and C.A. Milstead.
The body will lie in state in Dunn's funeral Home until time for the services. Interment will be in the Garden of Prayer Section of Tucumcari Memorial Park with Dunn's in charge.
