James Board Dowell was a son of Elijah Dowell and Jemima Board Dowell.

James served in Captain Solomon Brandenburg's Company, 3rd Regiment, Kentucky Detached Miltia during the War of 1812. (Widow's certificate WC-3311. Ky. Soldiers of the War of 1812, compiled by Minnie S. Wilder, Baltimore, 1969.)

The 1966 sketch of the four Dowell headstones by (Mary) Lucille (Shacklett) Seymour (1911-2006) was found in the family history papers of Charles L. Barnes (1892-1980) of Oswego, Labette County, Kansas. Charles was the son of Armstead L. Barnes (1843-1923) born in Meade County, Kentucky, the son of Armstead and Elizabeth (Dowell) Barnes (1814-1896). Elizabeth was a daughter of James B. and Barbara (Shacklett) Dowell shown here. Charles L. Barnes had employed Frances (Shacklett) Fast (1891-1968) of Meade County to research his family, so it would certainly be a good possibility that Charles received the sketch from Frances Fast. Charles' great niece, Thelma I. (Hickok) Queen (1929-2013) of Wichita, Kansas, supplied a copy to Larry E. Barnes of Wichita, also a descendant of Armstead and Elizabeth (Dowell) Barnes.
