Elijah is a brother to the John A. Dowell buried at this cemetery. They are sons of James Board Dowell (1791-1860) and Barbara Shacklett (1794-1874) of Meade County, Kentucky.

Elijah Dowell married Mary F. Hayden. It is listed that she is a daughter of Jacob Hayden.

Chillicothe Constitution, Chillicothe, Missouri, Jan. 30, 1903;
"E. R. Dowell Dead - Elija Dowell, one of Livingston county's well known and respected residents, died at his home near Springhill Monday morning. Pneumonia was the cause of his death in addition to chronic heart trouble.
The deceased was born in the country near Louisville, Ky., in the year 1819. He removed early in the year 1861 to Missouri, settling in Jackson township, where he resided until his death. He is survived by a wife and five children. Mrs. James of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. S. Brown of Nebraska City, Neb., and Rev. E. R., John and C. S. Dowell who made their home with their parents."
