Elizabeth Dowell was born in Kentucky, the oldest of 12 children of James Board Dowell (1791-1860), born in Bedford County, Virginia, and Barbara Shacklett Dowell (1794-1874). James and Barbara Dowell last settled in Stith Valley in what is now Meade County, Kentucky.

Elizabeth Dowell was married to Armstead Barnes in Meade County, Kentucky on September 5, 1830 by Simeon Buchanan (1789-1863) a veteran of the War of 1812, and son of a former member of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.

Elizabeth and Armstead were the parents of 12 children.

Elizabeth Barnes went to Texas to live with her sister Susan, widow of Burnis B. Shacklett. They were living with Susan's son, B. C. "Cad" Shacklett. That house, listed in Elizabeth's obit as 811 Garnett Street, is now gone, replaced by a new home.

Elizabeth was survived by 9 of her 12 children.
