Mrs. Oldham Names Crooks In Who's Who

Mrs. J.D. Oldham of Goldendale was the lucky winner of the Who's Who contest this week, correctly identifying Carl Crooks as the hidden celebrity. However, Mrs. Oldham did not have a complete clue list, so wins only $7.50 with the $23.50 jackpot to be added to next week's bonus prize.

Clues missed by the winner were 'CC,' Mr. Crooks' initials, substituted for the abbreviation 'Co.' in the Grange Supply Co. ad signature (this clue was missed by a great many people, although quite a number of entries correctly included it) and 103 N. Columbus, which is his business address. Many folks missed that one, too.

Apparently the most misleading 'clue' was the item in Flowers by Maxine, which said 'Blue Eyes.' This is the type of sneaky thing which contestants have to check into, to be sure of their facts. Mr. Crooks happens to have quite handsome brown eyes. So of course does Maxine, but the other member of the firm, Bob Anderson, has blue eyes. Apparent clues which describe a person do not necessarily describe the Who's Who, and hence are not clues to his identity.

Longtime Resident

Carl Crooks is a longtime resident of Goldendale, having come here when he was four years old. He attended local schools and was graduated from Klickitat Academy in 1903. He wed the former Miss Hamilton in April, 1908. He has been a bookkeeper for the Goldendale Flour Milling Co., cashier of the State Bank of Goldendale, and was one of the organizers of the National Bank of Goldendale, which he also served as vice-president. He was also vice-president of the Pioneer State Bank when the banks were consolidated.

Crooks also acted as appraiser and field collector for the Federal Land Bank of Spokane, and in 1935 he started his own real estate and insurance business, the C.E. Crooks Agency. He is still active in the real estate portion of the business, and H. Gardner Rowley, in the same office, has taken over the insurance agency.

Long active in the work of the Church of Christ, Carl Crooks has also participated in many civic activities over the years. He has been president of the chamber of commerce, has served on the city council and on the library board, and was once city treasurer.

Three Daughters

Mr. and Mrs. Crooks have three daughters, Mrs. Henry Culver, Mrs. Art Wickman and Mrs. Mel Davidson. They reside at 120 W. A street, which premises are a model of neatness and meticulous care. Mr. Crooks is a man who sweeps his sidewalks and his lawn with the same precision and frequency as the floors and porches. His cheery smile and greeting is known to most of the city's residents, as was apparent from the number of entries in the contest.

The complete correct list of clues follows: VP, Coast to Coast Stores, page 8; Lawnsweeper, Grange Supply Co., page 5; Worked with money, Goldendale Signal Service, page 5; in the group Who's Who ad, Active in Church work, Appraiser, Prexy, 1908-1903, Gardener, Bookkeeper, Academy Grad, CC, 3 Girls, Local Schools.

There are only six more Who's Who contests before the expiration of the series. If you don't enter, you can't win. The jackpot prize on this week's mystery person is $47.00. Good hunting!
