Mr. Silas N. Self passed away at his home near Mt. Bethel last Friday. He was 87 years old last November, and the greatest part of his life was spent in the Mt. Olivet community.
Besides his wife, eight children survive him: Messrs. P. W. Self, Chatam; J. A. Self, Lynchburg; T. M. S. Self and J. M. Self of Martinsville; Mesdames J. O. Clark, J. W. Cheshire, J. H. Lovell and T. G. Chappell.
He is also survived by one brother, Mr. J. W. Self.
During the Civil War Mr. Self was a brave soldier and loyal Southerner.
Many years ago he gave the land and a great part of the means for the erection of Mr. Olivet Methodist Church. Funeral services were held at Mt. Olivet Church and the body buried in the Church Cemetery.
Six of his grandsons, Messrs. Claude Self, D. W. Cheshire, Jesse Self, Thomas Lovell, Clyde Self and Joseph Clark were selected as pall bearers.
