A pioneer in the retail business here, Mr. Self engaged in the mercantile business for a number of years, being a part owner of the Martinsville Mercantile company.
When that firm went out of business, Mr. Self, with Paul W. Bowles, founded the Self-Bowles Motor company, which the firm operated for some years, after which they sold out to the present Burroughs-White Motor Company

In young manhood Mr. Self was united in marriage to the former Miss Mary Dickerson, who passed away here in 1929.
To this union were born three children, all of whom survive, they being Mrs. LeRoy Blackwell, Sr., of Miami, Florida, and Mrs. Emory H. Goode of Fieldale, and T. Clyde Self, of Martinsville. Four grandchildren also remain.
