Wylie F Altman, 77, mayor of Arlington Tx from 1935-1947, died early Thursday morning at his home, 406 S Center in Arlington, after a 6 day illness.
Altman, who in 1947 declined to run for
re-election in favor of ' going fishing', was born in Searcy, Arkansas in 1872 and came to Texas with his parents in a covered wagon when he was 6. The family settled in Rolly in Central Texas.

Altman, who was in the merchantile business for more than 50 years, established his first store in partnership with his brother, Sidney Bradford Altman, in Hico, where he had spent most of his childhood.

In 1905 the brothers moverd to Mitchell County, where they founded the Loraine Merchantile Company, which later grew to embrace stores throughout West Texas. In 1917 Altman came to Arlington and opened the Altman Ladies Store which he operated until about 2 yrs ago.

A lifelong Methodist, he served as superintendant of the Sunday School at the First Methodist Church of Arlington and was a steward for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Arlington Masonic Lodge No. 438. He recently received a letter designating him as an honorary vice president of the Texas State Fair Association of Dallas for 1950.
On Tuesday the former mayor and his wife would have celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs Jenna Altman: three daughters, Mmes. Sol Parks ( Helen) of Houston, Vincent Parsons ( Rhuey) of Pasadena, CA, and Jack Collins ( Ouida) of Dallas; a son, Elvis Altman, of Arlington: a sister, Mrs Ada Pierce of Abilene, and 8 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p, Friday in the First Methodist CHurch of Arlington, with Revs. John Wesley Ford and George Shearer officiating. Burial will be held in Parkdale, with Moore Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Graveside services will be conducted by his Masonic Lodge. The church stewards will serve as pallbearers.
