GIRL FINDS MOM'S BODY, FATHER, 51, DIES LATER
A 12-year-old Salt Lake City girl returned from school Thursday to find her mother dead and her father near death in a double shooting in the front room of their west side residence.
Her father died at a Salt Lake Hospital about 11 p.m., some 6 1/2 hours after the shooting, from effects of a bullet wound in the head.
Mrs. Alice VanBuskirk, 49, 844 W. 7th South, was slumped over dead in a front room chair when Donna Joy VanBuskirk entered the house about 3:30 p.m., investigating officers reported.
Her father, Mahlon S. VanBuskirk, 51, was seated in another chair, a bullet wound in his forehead and a .22 caliber rifle near his hand, officers said.
Capt. Dewey J. Fillis said the girl notified her brother, Glen VanBuskirk, 1426 S. 9th West, who in turn notified police.
Three empty shells were found on the floor and one in the chamber of the bolt action rifle.
Police officers said Mrs. VanBuskirk was shot three times.
One bullet struck her glasses then entered her right temple, Detective E. M. Barton said.
A second bullet entered the right side of her chest and exited through her back. The third slug struck her right cheek from above and exited near her left jawbone, said Detective Barton.
X rays indicated the bullet injuring Mr. VanBuskirk entered between his eyes, passed through the brain and lodged against the back of his skull, said Detective Barton.
