Feb. 23, 1905, Waverly Enterprise:
Mr. Jesse L. Allen, for thirty years a resident of Waverly, passed away at nine o'clock Friday morning Feb. 17, 1905, at the Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville. Eight days previous he had been seriously hurt in an accident at the Hospital for the insane. Pneumonia was added to his other troubles, and the struggle proved too much for his weakened frame.

Mr. Allen was born near White Hall in Green county August 2, 1838. He was married Dec. 12, 1858 to Miss Rebecca Morrow. He was a miller by trade and was also in the mercantile business for some years in Waverly. For the last four years he has been living in Jacksonville, but his home was always here. He was an active member of the Masonic and I.O.O.F. lodges while a resident here, but in Jacksonville he could not attend lodge and therefore dropped out of the orders. He was a member of the Mutual Aid Society at the time of his death. He was early a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, but in 1863 joined the Congregational church of Waverly, of which he remained a member until some two years ago, removing his membership to Jacksonville.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Cyrus Curtiss, and Mrs. Mary Riley and one son, Frank D. who lives in Girard. One sister, Mrs. G.C. Adams, of Austin, Minn. and five brothers, F.H. of Danville, Dr. W.A. of Epworth, John and Lewis of Waverly, and Albert of Palmyra also are left to mourn his loss. A man devoted to his family, ever thoughtful for many others, the circle of those who sincerely and deeply mourn hsi loss is very large. A congregation that could not find seats gathered Sunday afternoon in the Congregational church to pay respect ot his memory. The community generally seemed intent upon manifesting its high regard for such manhood as his. The services were in charge of his pastor Rev. W.S. Bugby, and interment followed in East Cemetery.
