Lewis Allen is Called by Death
Well Known Waverly Resident Died Last Week at Age of 76 Years
Lewis Allen, son of Jesse and Mary Bell Allen, was born in Greene County near White Hall, June 12, 1853, and died Thursday July 4, 1929, at his home in Waverly, aged 76 years and 22 days. Mr. Allen had been in failing health for more than a year, but had been able to carry on until the last three weeks, being confined to his bed but one day.
On April 8, 1878, he married Miss Lillie A. Peet, who with their four daughters, Mrs. Albert Burns, Mrs. Fred A. Ford, and Ethel and Lura and two grand children, Jeanette Ford and Allen Burns survive him. An infant son preceded him in death on July 5, thirty-seven years ago.
Mr. Allen professed religion in his youth and united with the Presbyterian church at Belltown, Illinois, In 1898 he united with the First Congregational church of Waverly, in which church he has served as deacon for twenty-three years. He took pride and pleasure in fulfilling his duties in this relation. He felt it to be a privilege as well as a duty to seve at the Lord's table and if necessary made sacrifices that he might be present at the Communion services of the church.
His was a life of service both in church and home. As a husband and father he was loving and sacrificial - always so thoughtful and kind in the little details that go to make a beautiful home life.
A year ago last April Mr. and Mrs. Allen in a quiet way, celebrated their golden wedding, and this today is a very happy memory to all the dear ones.
As a father, friend, and neighbor his life could well be emulated by all.
He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America lodge.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the Congregational church, Rev. C. D. Shoemaker, the pastor, officiating.
Burial was in Waverly cemetery.
