Apr 1936: Waverly Journal:
Crowell.
Mary Elizabeth Allen was born September 2, 1862 at White Hall, Ill., and passed away at her home at 1520 11th Street, Des Moines, Iowa, April 6, 1936 at the age of 73 years, 7 months and 4 days.
When but a small child she, with her parents moved to Waverly, Illinois, where she grew to womanhood and there was married to William M. Riley in the year 1890. Barely 90 days after their marriage death claimed her husband, leaving her with a hope of an heir. A girl baby was born to her to bring sunshine and happiness which again must end all too soon. When her daughter, Willia, was but seven years of age she too was claimed by death. Mrs. Riley returned to her former profession of teaching after the husband's death and followed that work as a teacher in the public schools of Illinois for more than 25 years.
In September of 1921 she was united in marriage to Mr. Dwight R. Crowell of Des Moines, Iowa, and took up her residence in Des Moines where she has since resided. In 1928 Mr. Crowell preceded her in death.
Early in life Mrs. Crowell gave her life to Christ, uniting with the Congregational church in her home town. After moving to Des Moines she united with the Trinity Methodist church where she continued a faithful and active member all her days. She served as President of the W.F.M.S. and was Secretary of Good Literature up until just a few months before her death. She was also a member of the W.C.T.U.
She was the last of her immediate family. Those who mourn her passing are nephews and nieces and step-nephew. The remains were accompanied by nephew, Homer Curtiss, to Waverly, funeral services being held at 2:00 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the Congregational church, Rev. M. Kelly, the pastor, officiating.
The pall bearers were Homer Curtiss, of Des Moines, Iowa; Herman H. Allen, of Pawnee; Frank Bearden, of Virden; Frank O. Curtiss, Albert Burns and Allen Burns.
Burial was in East cemetery.
