SHORTTS GAP, Va. — Mr. Melvin Junior Proffitt, age 79, of Shortts Gap, Va., passed away Friday January 23, 2009 at his home. Born at Buchanan County, Va. he was the son of the late Henry Melvin Proffitt and Ocie Belle Davis Proffitt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester Proffitt and Brady Proffitt; one sister, Darlene Ball; and one granddaughter, Kimberly Diane Baldwin. Mr. Proffitt was a retired coal miner, and he enjoyed working around the house and listening to blue grass music. Mr. Proffitt is survived by his wife of 62 years, four sons, three daughters, nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his loving dog, Dale also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Melvin Junior Proffitt will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday January 26, 2009 in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, Va. with the Rev. Jack Ward and the Rev. James Salyers officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be Bobby Johnson, Otis Johnson, Jessie Dye, Paul Smith, Wayne Ward, Charlie Ward and Bobby Howell. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff, Va. from 6-9 p.m. Sunday with services at 7:00 p.m. Singleton Funeral Service is serving the Proffitt family.
