Mr. Jerry Arnold Proffitt, age 62, of Shortt Gap, Virginia, passed away Friday (August 10, 2012) in Richlands, Virginia. Born April 30, 1950 in Tazewell County, Virginia, he was a son of Pauline (Poj) Ratliff Proffitt of Shortt Gap, Virginia and the late Melvin Proffitt. He had spent his early life in the area, prior to moving to Virginia Beach, moving back to Tazewell County fifteen years ago. He was a retired painter for over forty years and had last worked at DelRick Corp. He always enjoyed working on lawnmowers and vehicles and loved his dog, Buttons.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Danny Lee Proffitt
and one niece, Kimberly Baldwin.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife of twenty-nine years, Teresa Dye Proffitt of the home;
one daughter, Maria Bennett and husband, Rob of King George, Virginia;
two brothers, Michael Proffitt and wife, Kim of Shortt Gap, Virginia and Tim Proffitt of Jacksonville, Florida;
three sisters, Sue Lane and husband, Jim of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, Teresa Baldwin and husband, David of Raven, Virginia and Jan Howell and fiancé, Greg Browning of Red Ash, Virginia;
four grandsons, one great-granddaughter;
father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elden and Larcie Hess of Council, Virginia;
special niece, Jamie "Wild One" Griffith, special nephew, David Cruey; several additional nieces and nephews and his special k-9 friend, Buttons also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Monday at the Combs Ridge House of Prayer with Rev. Donna Johnson and Rev. Randall Stevens officiating. Interment will follow in the Stevens Cemetery on Combs Ridge.
Pallbearers will be J.R. Taylor, Matthew Street, Jason Dye, Gary Dye, James Griffith, Elden Hess, David Baldwin and Bobby Cruey.
Mike Proffitt, David Cruey and Jacob Griffith will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Friends may call at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6 PM Sunday where an evening service will be conducted at 7 PM.
The wife will receive friends at the Stevens Cemetery from 2 PM -4 PM on Sunday prior to the visitation.
