The legacy of the crusty newspaper man Morris Higley is long and wide. In 1935, he went to work at the Childress newspaper, then managed by his Uncle. Morris even interviewed Will Rogers. From 60 years as editor and eventually publisher and owner of the Childress Index. Morris was a member and officer of almost every organization in Childress, such as the Rotary Club and Elks. He also served with the Game and Fish Commission, Texas Industrial Commission and Red River Authority. He was also awarded the Silver Beaver, Boy Scouting's highest honor; membership in the Panhandle Press Association Hall of Fame and Childress Man of the Year. Higley's column, was his forum for blasting everyone from homosexuals to liberals. Its fierce opinions accurately reflected the man. Carol's parents were born in Mississippi and Oklahoma. He leaves two children.
