Services Conducted for S. Therin Merritt
Samuel Therin Merritt, 80, former Afton resident, died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter , Denzel and LaRue Wood in North Logan, Utah, Dec. 23, 1977.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1977 at 1 p.m.at the Afton Second-Third Ward LDS chapel with Bp. Lynn Nield of the Third Ward conducting. Burial was in the Afton City Cemetery.
Therin was born June 25, 1897, at Bedford Wyo., a son of George William and Martha Michaelson Merritt. He married Ida Taysom on June 10, 1920, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived in Afton, where Therin barbered for 52 years. A few years after his retirement at age 74, they moved to Logan, Utah, because of his wife Ida's ill health. They loved Star Valley and its people, making the move hard for them to make.
He was called to serve a two year LDS mission to the Central States in October 1917. He has served as Mutual president, first counselor in the Sunday School Superintendency, worked on the Stake Sunday School board, filled two Stake Missions. He was first counselor to Bp. John L. Metcalf for eight and a half years, Sunday School teacher, adult Aaronic Priesthood supervisor, home teacher and secretary of the High Priest group. He also served on the Afton City Council for eight years. At the time of his death he was serving as a home teacher and usher in the North Logan Third Ward.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Elayne) Cooper of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Mrs. Denzel (LaRue Wood) of North Logan, Utah; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; six brothers and one sister, Heber and Ray, both of Afton; Joseph of Thayne; Aca of Salt Lake City; Clarence of Mesa, Arizona; Ozro and Mrs. Jacob (Nora) Kellersberger, both of Afton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida, in 1975, his parents, one brother, and one granddaughter.
