Joseph Marvin Merritt, 89, died on July 17, 1995 at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City of complications following knee surgery.
Funeral services were held July 21, 1995 in the Thayne 1st Ward and interment was in the Bedford Cemetery.
Joseph was born in Bedford March 22, 1906 to George Williams Merritt and Martha Nora Michaelson. He lived in Bedford until his marriage on June 15, 1927 to Lera Barrus. The young couple moved to Idaho where he was manager of cheese and buttermaking plants. Thayne was his home from 1936 until his death.
He helped bring electricity to his community and ws the first president of Lower Valley Power and Light. He served as a director with Star Valley Swiss Cheese Company over 16 years.
A lifelong member of the LDS Church, he served missions in Owena Valley CA and with his wife Lera, in Alaska, British Colombia and Arizona Temple. He was bishop of the Thayne Ward from 1941 to 1947. Much satisfaction came from 15 years working on the Idaho Falls Temple with Lera and holding numerous positions in the church.
He is survived by his wife of Thayne, children; Dean J of Thayne; LaVere B. Provo, UT; wayne M. Afton; Marie Wade Ogden UT; Mary Jo Schwab, Logan, UT; Marlene Glad, Sandy, UT; Beth Merritt, Zoleake Ceder City, UT; Bonnie McBride, Riverdale, UT; sister and brother Nora Kellersberger Afton Clarence Mesa AZ 75 grandchildren.
Preceded in death by three children Sons LaVon, Orrin and Alan; brothers Heber, Ray, Theron, LaVere, Ozro and Aca
