Joe Farris Shelton, 82, of Paris passed away peacefully in his sleep with his wife of 56 years, Callie, by his side Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at Paris Regional Medical Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial is set for 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with Father Morgan White officiating. Burial follows in Evergreen Cemetery under the direction of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home.
A Rosary service is scheduled at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with family receiving friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
He was born Feb. 22, 1924, in Roxton, to Clyde Oaklan
and Tommie Farris Shelton. He graduated from Paris High School in 1941 and attended Paris Junior College prior to his enlistment in the Army Air Corps. He served as a radio gunner in the 43rd Bomber Division of the 5th Air Force during World War II. He married Callie Ann Ayres on June 18, 1950, in Paris. As a manufacturers representative for various ladies clothing companies, he worked apparel markets including Dallas, New Orleans, Memphis and New York City. He was an avid golfer and member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. He loved God, his family and his country.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Tom Shelton, and one sister, Dora Shrum.
He is survived by his wife, Callie Ann Shelton of Paris; four children, Lou Ann Bassano and husband, Walter, of Benbrook, Brad Shelton and wife, Gwen Ann, of Paris, Alice Jones and husband, Dr. Ray Jones, of Fort Worth, and Laura Jack and husband, Gary of Fort Worth; seven grandchildren, Walt Bassano and Katy Bassano, both of New York City, N.Y., Scott Shelton and wife, Taryn, of Shreveport, La., Julie Shelton of Waco, Ben Barnett and wife, Rebecca, of Burleson, Chris Jack of Lubbock, and Callie Jack of Fort Worth; one sister, Clydelle Westbrook of Paris; three sisters-in-law, Pat Shelton and Jean Cook, both of Paris and Mary Wallace of Naples, Fla.; one brother-in-law, Bill Ayres and wife, Virginia, of Paris; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and a close friend, Zoe Raines.
Asked to serve as pallbearers are John Good, C.J. Cooper, Dr. Jim Miles, Mackey Charles, Morris Granberry, Keith McKee and Gilbert Terry.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and nursing staff who so lovingly cared for him.
Honorary pallbearers are Leo Caldwell, Frank Homer Sr., Bob Thornborrow, Ray Wunsch, Bill Maness and C.R. Sikes.
If desired, memorials may be made to Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church or to a charity of choice.
