GEORGE P. MATTHEWS, AGED 61, HAD BEEN ILL SOME WEEKS

MASSENA~ Nov. 17-George Matthews, 61, one of Northern New York's best known men in the banking industry here, having been cashier of the First National Bank of Massena, for many years, died last week at His home at 48 Glenn Street, after an illness of some time. He had been in declining health for several years and retired from active business last January, remaining as chairman of the board until last month, when His condition became more critical and He was forced to take His bed.

Mr. Matthews was born in Louisville Landing, on May 29, 1867, the son of the late James and Christian Stone Matthews. He lived in Louisville Landing as a boy and attended school there and later came to Massena to school. About 1887, He obtained His first banking education, when He went to work for George E. Britton, who conducted the only bank in Massena then. He worked there for a few years, then went to Peekskill, where He worked for several years in Peekskill National Bank. Returning to Massena, He became associated with the late Henry H. Warren in the real estate business.

On March 11, 1906, He again entered the banking business with the First National Bank of Massena and remained with that institution until HIs retirement on Jan. 1, 1928. He was cashier for many years and the bank under His leadership became one of the strongest banking houses in Northern New York.

On Nov. 20, 1907, He married Sue E. Snaith of Massena, daughter of George A. and Sarah Chambers Snaith. Surviving are His widow, one daughter, Elizabeth, a student in Syracuse University and one son, James of Massena; one uncle, Hugh Matthews of California. He was a member of the Massena Lodge, No. 513, F. and M.
