James Matthews, one of the oldest and most respected residents of the town, died at His home Wednesday morning at 7:15 o'clock, after a long illness of cancer of the face. The funeral was held Friday afternoon from His home, conducted by Rev. L.E. Rose of Louisville and assisted by Rev. B. Arthur Arnold of Massena.
James Matthews was born in lower Canada, Jan. 27, 1836, the third of a family of six sons and two daughters of the late Patrick Matthews. His parents came from the Northern part of Ireland and settled into lower Canada. When He was very young, His parents moved to Vermont, where they lived but a short time, then came to Massena and lived on what is now the O.P. Benson farm and later to Louisville Landing. His parents died some years ago. He was married on Jan. 25, 1865, to Miss Christina Stone of Louisville, who died fourteen years ago.
He attended the district schools, Potsdam academy and studied law for a time. He kept a store for many years and looked after His farm. He was Justice of the Peace for several years, Customs Collector for four years and Postmaster for several years.
He was a kind father and neighbor and will be greatly missed by all. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. C. N. Hardendorf of Cleveland, Ohio, who has been with Him since July and one son, George P. Matthews of Massena. He leaves two brothers, Hugh Matthews of Emmet, CA. and Robert Matthews of this place and one sister, Mrs. Mary Stone of Louisville.
