A prominent Star Valley church leader and native, Jesse A. Hurd, died June 23, 1993 at St. John's Hospital in Jackson following an illness.
Funeral services were held June 26 at the Auburn-Grover LDS Church. Bishop Gregg Draney officiated and interment was at the Auburn Cemetery.
Jesse was born Oct 24, 1916 to Mahonri and Lucy Hurd. He lived most of his life in Auburn. He attended Star Valley High School where he participated in basketball, football and track,
He married Velda Ranzenberg, Jan 31, 1941 in the Salt Lake Temple and brought her to the family farm in Auburn where they raised nine children, eight daughters and one son.
Jesse served two LDS Missions to Missouri, one before he and Velda were married and one while Velda took care of five little girls and the farm at home.
He had a strong testimony of the truthfulness of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the temporal and spiritual value of the lessons it taught. Integrity, dependability, compassion and giving more than a day's work for a day's pay were all principles which governed his life.
Church callings besides two full-time missions include bishop, stake mission president, councilor in the stake presidency, high councilor and 11 years as a temple ordinance worker.
For 25 years Jesse worked for the Lincoln County weed and Pest control as an inspector.
Jesse loved the great outdoors and spent many happy hours fishing and hunting. He especially enjoyed including friends and family in these activities.
Jesse Hurd is a quiet man who did much to help those in need. Be it a monthly check to support a missionary, a job so someone could earn what they needed, groceries or a plowed garden, his services were almost always behind the scene and known only to him and the recipient.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Velda Ranzenberg Hurd; nine children, Lynda beth Hurd Smith of Atlanta, GA; DeAnna Sue Hopkins of Boise, ID; Paula Ann Nield of Afton; Betty Jane Reed of Provo, UT; Lois LuDeen Putnam of Evanston, WY; Jess Blair Hurd of Auburn, WY; Judy Marlene Hurd of Sydney, Australia; Patricia Kay Bassett of Fairview and Wendy Joy Hurd of Boise, ID, 27 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three sisters Ada Nelson, Elvon Wood, Glenda Hyde and one brother DeLos Hurd.
