Stephen Giersch, son of Peter Giersch and Mary Cecilia (Percellet) Giersch, was born May 13, 1840 in Bautsch Netherlands. He came to America with his parents and four siblings and the family is first found in the 1850 Federal Census of Wisconsin. In that record Stephen is ten years of age.

When Stephen was about 18 the Giersch Family settled in the Salina, Kansas. Later, Stephen took out a homestead claim of 160 acres near the Saline river and lived in the Salina area the rest of his life.

Stephen and Amanda Jane (Snyder) Giersch married at the Courthouse in Salina. Together they had three children before Amanda died in 1870. Children born to this marriage were:
Jane Cecilia Giersch, b. July 12, 1864
Nancy Ann Giersch, b. Feb. 17, 1865
William Peter Giersch, b. July 22, 1869

The following year Stephen married Josephine Poelma on October 10, 1871 in Solomon, Kansas and to that union nine children were born:

Peter Theodore, b. Mar. 12, 1874
Mary Elizabeth, b. Jan 17, 1877
Gertrude, b. Jun 10, 1879
Theodore Henry, b. Apr 21, 1883

Stephen and Josephine celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary October 10, 1921 with children, families and close friends present. Josephine passed away Sept. 23, 1923, and Stephen was laid to rest by her side when he passed away June 22, 1927 - not quite four years later. Both are resting in the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Salina, Kansas.
