Rothmer served with the air corps during WWI. Following the war he returned to the University and recieved his master's degree. He taught school in Kellerton and Macksburg. Rothmer was an educational advisor in the CCC programs located in Sioux City and New London. During WWII he worked at the ordinance plant near Burlington.
After WWII he purchased the Coffee Shoppe for his son and son-in-law. Rothmer taught math at Lamoni High School. He was on the muncipal council for 2 years, LCLA council for 2 years, and membership in rotary club, masonic lodge, american legion, and city council.
Rothmer married Ruth Joy 13 Apr 1921 in Rockford, Illinois. Rothmer served in the Air Force during WWI. He and Ruth had 4 children: Mara Lea Scott, Edward Scott, John Scott, and Paul Scott.
