Hattie was a member of the local Womans Christian Temperence Union (WCTU) in the early 1880s when that organization was in its infancy.

Her family was neighbors of Eben Bailey. Eben, who was a widower without any surviving children, became quite ill for a time and Hattie came and took care of him through his illness. They were married on 28 June 1890 when she was 28 years old and he was nearing 54 years of age.

Eben was a Mason and Hattie became active in the Order of the Eastern Star.
