Marshall was the 2nd of 8 children and the eldest son of Eben and Hattie Nicholson Bailey.

He joined the regular Army during WWI. His Enlistment Record, Promotion Certificate and Discharge Record provide the following information.
Dec. 14, 1917: Enlisted as a Private at age 24 years 10 months at Fort Logan, CO.
Jan. 28, 1918: Became Member of 354th Aero Squadron.
Aug. 18, 1918: Left U.S. for Saizerais Airdrome, France
Sep. 10, 1918: Promoted to Corporal and served as a Chauffeur to date of discharge.
Jun 26, 1919: Arrived back in U.S.
Jul. 11, 1919: Honorably discharged at Camp Dodge, Iowa (with the notation "Services no longer required.")

Marshall married Marie Kromminga on 22 January 1924 in Lennox, SD. After marriage they lived 4 years on a farm near Spencer, then 7 years on the home farm. They lived near Peterson for 13 years on their own farm, then retired in Royal in 1946. They had 1 son and 2 daughters.
