Joseph was the son of Johan (John) Leonard and Augusta Knoerzer. He was born in 1857 on the Knoerzer Family Farm, which at the time was located in North Township (Saxony District), Lake County, Indiana - today known as Hammond (Woodmar District), Lake County, Indiana.

On November 10, 1887, Joseph married Katherine Baltes (daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Baltes).

Joseph and Katie resided on Clinton Street where they raised their family of seven children. He was a shoe maker by trade.

Death of J. Knoerzer

Joseph Knoerzer, 54 Clinton street, one of Hammond's pioneer settlers and respected business men, died at the family residence early yesterday morning following an illness extending over a period of two weeks. Death is attributed to a complication of diseases. He is a brother of Herman, Thomas, Otto and Leonard Knoerzer of Hammond, and Mrs. Emil Schreiber of Saxony.
Mr. Knoerzer was first taken ill two weeks ago and while his condition was not then thought to be of a serious nature his strength rapidly failed. His health has not been the best and after suffering a relapse last Saturday he passed away Sunday morning at 5 o'clock.
He was 57 years old and was born at Saxony. He has been a resident of Hammond practically all his life and was the owner of an up-to-date shoe repairing shop on Hohman street. He is well known and respected and is a member of the Guards of the Blessed Sacrament and the St. Joseph verein of St. Joseph's church, and the Catholic Benevolent League of Indiana.
Besides a wife, he is survived by several children - Edward, Joseph, Herman, Lawrence, Thomas, Leo A. and Mrs. Raymond Rascher. The funeral will be held at the St. Joseph's church on Wednesday morning at 8 o'clock. Interment at St. Joseph Cemetery.
