Katherine was the daughter of Jacob Baltes and Elizabeth Becker. In 1881, Katherine (Katie) emigrated with her mother and brother, John, from Germany to America. They traveled on the Vaderland vessel and arrived in New York City on March 26, 1881. Her father, Jacob, had arrived in America a year earlier and settled in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania making his trade as a carpet weaver.
Katie spent a few years in Wilkes-Barre and then removed to Hammond, Lake County, Indiana. She married, Joseph Knoerzer on November 10, 1887. To this union seven children were born: Leo A.; Edward Jacob; Joseph Peter; Loretta; Herman N.; Lawrence Walter and Thomas.
