Marland Dorr Washburn was born January 17, 1935, in Lexington, Oklahoma (Cleveland County), the youngest child of John Teaman Washburn and Dollie West Rose. Marland's older siblings were Thomas Virgil born September 16, 1915; Alma Louise born February 2, 1917; John Wendell born February 17, 1919; Dwight Dutch, born December 5, 1921; Mary Elizabeth born November 13, 1923; and Kenneth Washburn born January 6, 1927.

Marland married in March 1961 in Mobile County, Alabama, to Joan Mae Fuqua. They later divorced. Marland second married Peggy Virginia Corley in Harris County, Texas on October 18, 1968. Peggy was born January 1, 1938, and died March 17, 1972, in Houston, Texas (Harris County).

Marland was a commercial airline pilot with 17 years of flying experience. He was a Captain for Texas International Airlines and he also flew in the Reno National Championship Air Races in the T-6 Class. At the start of a race on September 12, 1975, the wing of Marland's T-6 clipped a pylon, destroying a large portion of the left wing of his aircraft. He crashed while in a tight formation and was killed instantly.

Marland died at the age of 40 on September 12, 1975, in Reno, Nevada (Washoe County) and was buried in Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, Oklahoma (Cleveland County).
