Mr. John Albert Richardson, 84, of the Mill Creek section of Raven, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2007 at his home.

Born November 3, 1922 in Russell County, Va., he was the son of the late Ranzy Dowell and Jennie Sloan Richardson.

He was a retired state mine inspector and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was also a member of Swords Creek Block Church where he served as Chairman of the Board. He served in the United States Army during World War II, where he received a purple heart.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one daughter, Polly Shelton; one son, Buford Allen Richardson; and by six brothers, Dailey, Claude, Clyde, Garnett, Jessie and Paul Richardson.

Surviving are his loving wife, Ida Richardson of Raven; one daughter, Pat Smith and husband Dennis of Raven; five grandchildren, Wayne Shelton and wife Anita, Suzanne Cordle and husband Jerry, Kevin Smith and wife Alice Ann, Amanda Horton and husband Shaun and Josh Smith and wife Britennee; eight great-grandchildren, Jesse Patton, Alvin Shelton, Andrew Shelton, Alexis Horton, Aaron Horton, Keely Cordle, Ashton Cordle and Alissa Smith; two sisters, Myrtle Whited and Mary Richardson; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 7, 2007 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff, Va., with Rev. Carl Robinson, Rev. Ancil Childress, Rev. Jim Richardson and Rev. Dennis White officiating. Burial will follow in the Richardson Family Cemetery at Horton Ridge, Va. Pallbearers will be Kevin Smith, Josh Smith, Wayne Shelton, Shaun Horton, Jerry Cordle and Carl White. Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Veterans Honor Guard Association.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Singleton Funeral Service at Cedar Bluff.
