Samuel was born on April 9, 1873, south of Columbia, IA, in a log cabin. As a child he attended the Coal Glen School in Lucas County, IA. At 19, he joined the Coal Glen Methodist Church where his tenor voice and directing ofthe choir were an inspiration.
On December 25, 1896, he married Bessie May Benight at her parents' home in Brooks, IA. They were married by his uncle, Rev. John Harned (pastor at Brooks), who had introduced them. Samuel divided his time between farming and carpentry. They moved often - the children remember not attending one school hardly long enough to finish the year out. They lived in Iowa,Missouri, and for a short time, Nebraska.
After Samuel retired, they moved to a small house in Indianola. Samuel was employed by an Indianola jewelry store until 1958, where he repaired clocks and watches. Bessie had rheumatoid arthritis for a long time, and Samuel did much of the housework. He lived in an apartment in Osceola for a short time after she died, and later and apartment in Indianola.
Bessie passed away on November 29, 1959, of congestive heart disease. Samuel died on December 23, 1968, of a stroke, three days after he went to the hospital. They are both buried at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Indianola, IA.
