Alva Woman Died Saturday
Death struck the same family twice Saturday, Mrs. Rachel Elizabeth Irons succumbing here the morning, and her daughter, Mrs. Elmer Jack, dying at Garden City, Kansas, at 3:20 in the afternoon. Funeral services for Mrs. Irons are scheduled at the Pleasant View church at 2:30 Monday afternoon, with interment to be in the Pleasant View Cemetery.
Mrs. Irons died Saturday morning at her home, 305 Santa Fe street at the age of 87. She was born in Orange county, Indiana, October 2, 1857. She is survived by one son, Maurice H. Irons of Stafford, Kansas; and two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Davis of Laverne, Oklahoma, and Mrs. P.C. VanBenthuysen of Alta. Other survivors include two brothers, Paris Harned of Maramec, Oklahoma, and S.F. Harned of Beech, Iowa, and sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Colwell, Emporia, Kansas, and Mrs. Martha Dunkin of Americus, Kansas.
Stiles-Howerton Funeral home is in charge of the arrangements. Services for Mrs. Jack had not been announced here Saturday.
Rachel Elizabeth Irons, formerly of Columbia, daughter of Samuel and Mary Harned, was born in Orange county, Ind., Oct 2, 1859. When but three years of age, she, with her parents and a younger brother, migrated to Lucas county, Ia., where she grew to womanhood.
On July 4, 1889, she was united in marriage to James E. Irons, of the same community, and to this union were born 3 sons and 4 daughters. One son died in infancy. Her husband and one daughter, Maysie Fern, preceded her in death in 1930. One son, Stephen, died in 1942. One daughter, Mrs. Elmer Jack, of Garden City, Kans., passed away but a few hours later of the day of her own passing, on March 15, 1947. Mrs. Irons, at the time of her death, was 87 years, 5 months and 15 days of age.
Mrs. Irons, at an early age, was converted, and was for a number of years, a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. About 1926 she joined the Church of the Nazarene, at Emporia, Kas., being a charter member. She remained a faithful and devout member untl the time of her death.
She joined the Alva Church of the Nazarene in 1945, under the ministry of Rev. Blackshear, who officiated at her funeral, assisted by Rev. Wilson, pastor of the Pilgrim Holiness church, at Pleasant View, where burial took place.
In 1908 she, with her family, came from Iowa to Oklahoma, and for several years resided about eight miles west of Carmen. While a resident of that community she attended the Pilgrim Holiness church.
The family later removed to Colorado, and thence to Emporia, Kans., and still later she made her home in Knowles, Okla., before coming to Alva in August, 1945.
She leaves to mourn her passing one brother, S.F. Harned, of Beech, Ia., a half-brother, W.P. Harned, Maramec, Okla.; two sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Colwell, Emporia, Kans.; and Mrs. Hattie (should be Mattie) Dunkin, Amercus, Kans. One son, Maurice, of Stafford, Kans.; two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Davis, Laverne, Okla.; and Mrs. P.C. VanBenthuysen, of Alva, Okla, 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and host of other relatives and many friends.
She made her home at 305 Sante Fe, Alva.
