Samuel was born on November 27, 1823, in Paoli, Orange Co., Indiana, the son of Thomas Barker Harned and Elizabeth Real. He married Mahala Wellman on February 1, 1850. Mahala died of TB, on March 18, 1857. They had four children: Thomas V., Ann, Margaret Jane and William Paris.
Samuel married Mary Bingaman on November 25, 1858. They came to Iowa from Indiana in 1861. Their son, Carson, was only six weeks old at the time. They lived on his father's farm near Columbia, IA, in a log cabin. The cabin was later added onto, and was then used as the kitchen.
Samuel was a farmer, and they would take loads of wheat and corn several miles to a mill to exchange for flour and meal. Samuel and Mary were good people, and never turned away anyone in need. They had seven children: Rachel Elizabeth, John Carson, Susan Rebekah, Henry Christian, Martha Jane, Samuel Fletcher, and Amanda E.
Samuel and Mary also lived in Missouri for a time, and near Pleasant Hill, IA, but mainly in Pleasant Twp., Lucas Co., IA.
