Charles was born at 5:00 p.m. in Lucas County, near Columbia, IA, on October 18, 1902. He was the only son of Samuel and Bessie Harned, and had five sisters. As a child he loved to draw. He took penmanship courses when older and made beautiful pictures and writings. Charles farmed and he and his mother ran a cafe in Pleasantville, IA, where he made delicious candy.

He married Eleanor Flesher on October 8, 1931, in Bethany, MO. They lived with his parents, and after two years, they moved near Indianola. Finally enough money was saved to buy some land - 80 acres, east of Eleanor's parents' home. They built a house on it, and moved in when two rooms were completed. In 1946, they moved to a farm in the Cool community near Indianola, and lived there for 10 years. The children attended Cool School and the family attended Cool Fairview Christian Union Church while living there. They have moved several times after this, as Charles enjoyed fixing up homes and selling them and lived on farms near Indianola, Murray, Osceola, and Chariton. They bought a farm outside of Chariton, Iowa, and built a new home there where they enjoyed their final years together. They enjoyed raising a large garden every year. Charles also enjoyed collecting rocks and for some time cut and polished stones and made beautiful jewelry. He passed away on December 1, 1990, at Chariton following a hip fracture.
