Kenneth W. "Gabby" Evans, 91, of North Highlands, Calif., and formerly of Fillmore, died on Friday, June 20, 2008 in Sacramento, Calif.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in Glendale Cemetery in Fillmore, with military rites accorded by a Scott Air Force Base color guard. Family and friends may gather at the cemetery at 9:30 a.m. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home in Fillmore.
Mr. Evans was born on March 26, 1917, in St. Louis, Mo., the son of Morgan and Lydia L. "Lulu" Understahl Evans.
He was a retired master sergeant with the U.S. Air Force and a retired U.S. Postal Service employee. He served in the Air Force from 1939-67; he and his brother, Art, served in the Alaskan Theater of Operations as combat engineers. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.
He is survived by sons, Richard Dick Evans and his wife MaryDee of Chadron, Neb., and retired Marine Corps Lt. Col. Paul Evans and his wife Lynne of Etowah, N.C.; daughter, Linda Evans and her husband Eric Brown of Sacramento, Calif.; brothers, John Art Evans and his wife Gladys of Springfield, Mo., James Tip Evans of Humboldt, Morgan Jiggs Evans of Fillmore, and Robert Bob Evans and his wife Maxine of Carlinville; grandchildren, Bryan, Brett, Tammy, Christa, Debbie, Melanie and Molly; and three great-grandchildren. Grandson Bryan is a staff sergeant with the Air Force and grandson Brett Evans is a lieutenant corporal in the Marine Corps.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Paul, who was killed in action on the U.S.S. Arizona on Dec. 7, 1941; and sisters, Ruth Kirkamn and Annie Mutka
