David drowned from a raft of logs in 1857, after accumulating a good bit of timberland. The Wisconsin Magazine of History for 1926 featured an article (now posted on-line) by old-time logger Bruno Vinette, who says he worked timber owned by "Dave Hendricks" (p. 3) and witnessed the drowning of "Bob Hendricks" (p. 7). The names, dates and place are too close for this not to be a story about the subject of this memorial.
Lewis Hendricks apparently died in a similar accident 16 months later. Samuel Hendricks was co-administrator with Malinda of David's estate for some months, then returned to Alabama just two months after Lewis' death.
David and Malinda had six children, the first three born in Alabama before they left, the last two born in Wisconsin after they settled, and one born on the way! These were:
Mary Elizabeth Hendrix (Rheingans)
Lucinda Catherine Hendrix (Page)
William Elias Hendricks
Daniel Steven "Benjamin" Hendricks
John Howard Hendricks
Henry Ezekiel Hendricks
