Henry was a son of David S. Hendricks and Malinda Howard. He was just a year old when he lost his father in a logging accident. He moved to Brookings County, Dakota Territory in 1878 with his three older brothers and a number of other families from Wisconsin, then returned to Wisconsin briefly where he married Margaret Elspeth Hoyt April 6, 1879 at Eau Claire. They had three children who lived to maturity and at least one that did not (Ruth Hoyt Hendricks):
