Romaine C. Caslow
SHREWSBURY - Romaine C. Caslow, 88, of Villa Teresa Nursing Home in Harrisburg, formerly of Washington, D.C., and the Strasburg Haus in Shrewsbury, died at 1 a.m. Wednesday at Community General Hospital in Harrisburg, after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late Francis C. Sheffer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (the small church), 315 N. Constitution Ave., New Freedom. Burial will be in Greenmount United Methodist Church Cemetery, Glen Rock RD 1. Viewings will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Geiple Funeral Home Inc., 53 Main St., Glen Rock, with a prayer vigil at 7 p.m. and Lutheran funeral services at 8:30 p.m.
Mrs. Caslow was born April 8, 1912, in Codorus Township. She was the daughter of the late John P. and Lizzie E. (Kraber) Caslow.
She was an assistant dietary superintendent with Federal Government Services, working at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Washington, D.C., Fort Belvar in Virginia and several other locations in the Washington area, retiring in 1973. Prior to that, she was a nursing assistant at George Washington Hospital in Washington, D.C., and a union waitress in Washington, D.C., for 25 years. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Glen Rock, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church; the auxiliaries of Shrewsbury Fire Company, The Salvation Army and the Lutheran Home; South Central York County Senior Citizen Center in New Freedom and Waitress Union 507 in Washington, D.C.; and a former member of the Brodbecks Band and its auxiliary.
Mrs. Caslow is survived by two sons, Lynn L. Sheffer of East Berlin and Jon P. Sheffer of Columbia, Md.; five daughters, Sister Mary Elizabeth Sheffer of Trumbull, Conn., Sylvia R. Sheffer of Washington, D.C., Claire B. Lerma of Novata, Calif., Margaret R. Dillard of Springfield, Ohio, and Jane T. Gaudette of Burnsville, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a great-great- granddaughter; and a sister, Elizabeth Sweitzer of Dover. Mrs. Caslow was preceded in death by a son, Francis Anthony Sheffer.
Celebrant at the services will be her pastor, the Rev. Craig A. Lantz, her priest, the Rev. Father Robert Nugent, and her former pastor, the Rev. Richard C. Weaver, retired Lutheran minister.
Married on October 3, 1931 at Saint Jacob's (Stone) Church, Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, to Francis Charles Sheffer.
