Anton C. "Tony" Berger, 63, of East Wenatchee, and a longtime East Wenatchee businessman, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, in Central Washington Hospital following an extended illness.

He was born March 6, 1935, to John and Elizabeth (Wurtz) Berger, at Carson, ND. In 1942 he moved with his family to Spokane where he was raised and educated and graduated from Gonzaga Prep.

Following his schooling he served in the U.S. Army for two years. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Spokane and worked as a chef at the Davenport Hotel.

In 1959 Tony moved to Wenatchee where he and his brother Matt purchased the Wenatchee Grill which later became Tony's Grill and Catering Service.

He married Remona Roach on Feb. 4, 1961, at Wenatchee.

He purchased Tony's Market in East Wenatchee in 1968 which he owned and operated for 28 years until his retirement in 1997.

Mr. Berger was a member of the East Wenatchee Rotary where he was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship. He also served as president of the Rotary in 1981-82.

He was an active member of the Holy Apostles Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of the home, one son, Roger Berger of Federal Way; two daughters, Carisia (Robert) Berger Diaz of Spokane; Carletta Berger of East Wenatchee; two grandchildren Brianna and Joshua Diaz of Spokane; one brother, Adam Berger of Spokane; one sister, Barbara Muldoon of Bremerton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, stepfather, three brothers and one sister.

A mass of Christian burial will be held, 1 p.m., Sat., Feb. 6, 1999, at Holy Apostles Catholic Church with Fr. Seamus Kerr celebrant.

Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.

Viewing will be held Friday from noon to 8:30 p.m. with recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rotary Scholarship Fund.

Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
